Built for myself — used by others.

What is Layoutr?

Layoutr is a browser-based tool that lets you upload your floor plan, define the scale using two measurement points, and place furniture at true size. You can immediately see whether your sofa fits, whether the dining table is too wide, or whether that desk can go next to the window, before you buy anything or move in.

No installation. No CAD knowledge required. No subscription needed for the core features. Just upload, calibrate, and plan.

Why I built it

I was about to move house. I wanted to know exactly which furniture would fit in my new home, what dimensions were realistic and what the layout could look like. The tools I found were either too complex for what I needed, or simply did not let me upload my own floor plan and define the scale from an actual measurement.

So I did what every developer does: I built it myself.

What it does

  • Upload your floor plan: JPEG, PNG and WebP supported. Upload your own floor plan or architectural drawing.
  • Two-point scale calibration: Click two known points and enter the real-world distance. Layoutr calculates the scale automatically.
  • Place furniture at true scale: Drag, rotate and resize furniture using real dimensions, so you instantly see what fits and what does not.
  • Built-in furniture library: Beds, sofas, dining tables, desks and appliances: all pre-measured and ready to place.
  • Project storage and export: Save your layout and export to a .splan file. Available in the Pro version.

How it was built

The application itself runs on .NET with Razor Pages. The marketing website is built with Next.js and Tailwind CSS. All hosting runs on Microsoft Azure.

.NET for the solidity and performance of the core application, Next.js for a fast and SEO-optimised marketing site, and Azure as a hosting platform that fits seamlessly into the existing infrastructure.

The result

Layoutr is live. Without advertising, without a marketing budget: purely through organic search and AI search engines the app has attracted returning users and paying subscribers.

And that is exactly what validates the idea: the fact that people find Layoutr through SEO and AI search engines, use it and pay for it proves there is real demand for exactly this solution.

€0

advertising budget

Paying subscribers acquired without spending a single euro on ads. Purely through organic search and AI search engines.

What's next: marketing and growth

So far, Layoutr has grown entirely organically. The next step is deliberate marketing: targeted ads via Google and social, content around moving house and interior planning, and experiments with paid channels alongside organic discovery.

I keep the expectations realistic. Advertising is not a button that switches growth on, but a matter of measuring, learning and adjusting. The goal is not as many clicks as possible, but reaching the right people: those actually facing a move or a redesign. What works gets scaled up; what does not, stops.
